City types

Cities can be understood by how daily life is organized. A walkable city keeps everyday needs close. A transit city connects neighborhoods, jobs, schools, and regional destinations without requiring a car. A bikeable city makes short and medium trips safer, faster, and more affordable. These types can overlap, creating a healthier compact city where people have choices: short trips can be walked, medium trips can be biked, longer trips can use transit, and cars can still exist without controlling daily life. A car-dependent city works differently. When streets, housing, stores, and public space are designed mainly around driving, the city spreads out. That makes walking less useful, biking less safe, and transit harder to run. The diagram below compares these city patterns and shows why the strongest cities are car-optional, not car-dominated.

A walkable city puts daily needs close together, so people can reach groceries, schools, parks, errands, and neighbors on foot. Examples: Jersey City, Boston, and Philadelphia.
A transit city uses trains and buses to connect neighborhoods, jobs, downtowns, schools, airports, and regional destinations without needing a car. Examples: New York, Toronto, and Chicago.
A bikeable city has safe bike networks that make short and medium trips fast, affordable, low-stress, and space-efficient. Examples: Minneapolis, Portland, and Vancouver.
A healthy city combines all three: walking for nearby needs, biking for quick cross-neighborhood trips, and transit for longer citywide or regional travel. Examples: New York, San Francisco, and Vancouver.
Car-dependent
A car-dependent city spreads homes, stores, jobs, schools, and services far apart, so most daily trips require driving. That pattern can make a city less healthy by turning routine trips into long drives, reducing everyday movement, and increasing traffic risk. Examples: Jacksonville, Charlotte, Phoenix, Dallas, and Houston.
